Subject Description | This course will address the impact of neurological disability on an individual and their family and explore the complex physical, psychological and social issues involved in rehabilitation. This unit will build on knowledge of neurological disorders gained in Neurological Physiotherapy 1 and will explore more advanced treatment techniques and more complex patient presentations. The objectives of the course include the development of the student's understanding of neurological rehabilitation and discharge planning issues, expansion of assessment and treatment skills and the ability to evaluate treatment effectiveness. Independent clinical decision-making, treatment planning, record keeping, time management and team participation will be encouraged. The theoretical framework for various treatment methods will be explored via self learning guides with emphasis on the measurement of outcome, both qualitative and quantitative. Justification of treatment selection based on available evidence and efficacy of treatments implemented will be evaluated. Throughout the unit, team participation and timely and effective communication (both written and verbal) with patients, families and other health professionals will be encouraged. |
Assessment | Practical continuous clinical assessment (50%); clinical assignment (1500 words) (10%); group case presentations (10%) and theory 2-hour written exam (30%). Students must pass both clinical and theoretical components of the assessment in order to pass the subject. |
