Subject Description

This subject concentrates on the development, delivery and documentation of exercise classes for individuals and for special groups. It aims to promote the importance of physiotherapy input to preventative, health promotional and rehabilitative exercise and recreational activity in the normal population and in those with specific conditions. Objectives include the ability to advertise, organise and document an exercise class, the ability to plan and deliver exercise programs, and the ability to communicate with groups.

The following areas are emphasised: effective exercise class presentation and teaching strategies; the role of physiotherapy in health promotion and maintenance of optimal health and fitness; injury prevention in exercise classes; aerobics and strength training. Content will cover exercise for special groups (children, elderly, expectant mothers) and conditions (asthma, cystic fibrosis, neurological, cardiac, pulmonary, arthritis, back pain, and joint instability).

Assessment

Preparation, delivery and documentation of an exercise program comprised of class work (60%) and written work (40%).
