Subject Description

On completion of this subject students should comprehend the theory relevant to diagnostic procedures used in cardiothoracic physiotherapy assessment, the theory of ventilation and intensive care monitoring and management techniques used for critically ill patients. Students should understand the theoretical basis for cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and the rationale for the application of more advanced cardiothoracic physiotherapy treatment techniques. Students will have developed further skills in cardiothoracic assessment and the selection and application of treatment techniques, including those used in specialised unit settings. Students will have developed skills in the clinical decision making process, leading to development of comprehensive treatment plans for most patients treated by physiotherapists. The theoretical component will build on knowledge of respiratory and cardiovascular physiology and studies undertaken in Cardiothoracic Physiotherapy 1. This will include more advanced pathophysiology and clinical problem solving. Clinical practice will emphasise consolidation of clinical decision making skills and the way these may be applied to more complex patients.

Assessment

Practical continuous clinical assessment (50%); case presentation (10%) and final theory 2-hour written exam at end of year (40%). Students must pass both clinical and theoretical components of the assessment in order to pass the subject.
