Subject Description

The objectives of this subject is to enable the students to develop an understanding of the structure/function relationships in the central nervous system and spinal cord, the role of mechanisms of the major components of the endocrine system and the consequences of dysfunction, the normal processes in human reproduction, foetal development, growth and ageing and the effects of abnormalities in these processes, the effect of ageing on organ systems, vertebral anatomy and pathology. Content areas included are the development and organisation of the nervous system, brainstem function, motor control systems, sensory systems, the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, thyroid and adrenal function, maturation and reproductive function during life, fertility and reproduction, foetal growth, human development and ageing, structure and function of the vertebral column.

Assessment

Written assignment and practical exam (30%). Tutor assessment (10%). Written examination up to 6 hours (60%).
