Subject Description | The major objectives are to gain an understanding of the principles of whole body structure and function, of cellular structure and function, of the importance of genes, proteins and biological membranes and of the homeostatic mechanisms involved at the molecular, cellular and corporate level. The scientific basis of the following topics will be discussed: protein structure and function, lipids and biological membranes, medical genetics, gene therapy and management of genetic disease, cell structure and function, cell communication and homeostasis, cells and tissues, basic anatomy, anatomical perspectives, whole body homeostatis, fertilisation and embryogenesis, growth and development, ageing and death, host-pathogen relationships, defence mechanisms and pathological processes. |
Assessment | One written examination (up to 3 hours) 60%. Assignments up to 2000 words (40%). |
