Subject Description

This subject comprises two distinct streams: dental hygiene and dental therapy which cover two modules: Pre-clinical Oral Health Practice and Clinical Oral Health Practice. Some of the didactic teaching applies to both streams and is therefore delivered to the entire class. However, the emphasis placed on the various areas of study covered in this subject will vary depending on the student's selected clinical stream, and a proportion of lectures, seminars and problem-based learning will therefore be stream-specific. The clinical and pre-clinical sessions are held in small groups within each stream.

Areas covered by Pre-clinical Oral Health Practice include health education and promotion at the individual and group level; ageing and dental care for the elderly; orthodontic skills; conservative management of dental caries and periodontal disease; and general practice skills.

Areas covered by Clinical Oral Health Practice include dental auxiliary clinical management of dental caries and periodontal disease; and the clinical skills of the dental auxiliaries in orthodontics, paediatric dentistry and gerodontology.

Assessment

(1) Continuing assessment during the year of preclinical and clinical practicum, written reports and assignments; (2) One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 1; (3) One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2; (4) Clinical examination up to a maximum of one and a half days and a 15-minute oral examination at the completion of the subject;

A pass is required in each section for an overall pass in the subject.
