Subject Description

This subject covers the management of patients with a range of disabilities.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

  • comprehend the behavioural and management aspects of people with chronic and acute medical problems, physical, sensory or intellectual disabilities, and who are homebound, hospitalised and institutionalised; and the disease processes related to the dental management of patients with medical conditions and the oral manifestations of systemic disease;

  • appreciate the diversity of people within the community and the responsibility and problems in delivering dental care to them; and

  • have developed sufficient technical skill to provide oral hygiene instructions to, and remove calculus and plaque from, a range of patients with disabilities.

Assessment

One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2; and written assignments and practical reports throughout the semester.
