Subject Description

This subject covers pathology of teeth and their supporting structures and of the oral mucosa; systemic influences on the oral mucosa; introduction to pharmacology; and therapeutics in relation to diseases of the oral region.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

  • comprehend the causes and pathogenesis of the common oral conditions; and the management of the common oral disorders; and the relevance to dental care of the various medical conditions and associated therapies;

  • be able to recognise oral pathology in the clinical situation and instigate appropriate referral;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of pharmacology in relation to drugs and other medical agents used in dentistry; and

  • deliver a case presentation of a common oral condition in dental practice.

Assessment

(1) one 3-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2; (2) assessment of knowledge and understanding during the year; (3) assessment of professional skills and attitudes during the year.

A pass in each of (1), (2) and (3) is required for an overall pass in the subject. Additional tests may be required, including viva voce and/or practical examinations.
