Subject Description

This subject covers anatomy; histology; biochemistry; physiology; pain and pain control; pathology; microbiology; and oral anatomy.

On completion of this subject, the student should:

  • comprehend the terminology and the principal clinical applications of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, histology, microbiology, pathology and oral anatomy to the care of the dental patient; the process of odontogenesis, the formation of the periodontium and the development of oro-dental structures; the principles of the modes of spread and pathogenesis of infection; the characteristics of the microbial ecology of the oral cavity; and the principles and essential information regarding the major types of disease processes, their causes and the responses of cells, tissues, organs and systems in these disease processes;

  • identify and describe the morphological anatomy of the human dentition; and

  • appreciate the ranges of normality for anatomical and physiological parameters.

Assessment

One 3-hour written examination at the end of Semester 1; two 3-hour written examinations at the end of Semester 2; one viva voce examination at the end of Semester 2 and written assignments and practical reports throughout the year. A pass in each written examination is required for an overall pass in the subject.
