Subject Description | The principal objectives are to consolidate knowledge of clinical method learnt in fourth year, to gain knowledge of illness in greater depth, and to reinforce clinical experience with a more detailed knowledge of the major branches of therapeutics and ancillary investigations. The content includes the theory and practice of internal medicine and its main subspecialties, learned primarily as a result of supervised clinical experience during the medical attachments in sixth year; the scope includes general medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, haematology, infectious diseases, medical oncology, nephrology, neurology, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, clinical immunology, dermatology, gerontology, medical aspects of ophthalmology, and rehabilitation medicine; therapeutics in a clinical setting and the uses and limitations of diagnostic tests; common diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, e.g. venipuncture, abdominal paracentesis, pleural aspiration, lumbar puncture. Further development of skills in communication with patients and professional colleagues; handling of medical emergencies e.g. cardio-pulmonary arrest, acute blood loss, severe asthma, hypoglycemia, anaphylaxis; medical record keeping; ethical aspects of medical practice; and allocation of health resources. Some skills such as interviewing and counselling patients' relatives begin to be learnt in sixth year but are mainly learnt in the intern year. |
Assessment | A 3-hour end-of-year written examination; a 90-minute clinical examination at the end of the 14 week medical rotation. Students must pass both the written and clinical examinations. |
