Subject Description

The principal objectives are (i) to develop a sound knowledge of the structure and function of the female reproductive tract, the fetus and neonate; (ii) to be able to interpret normal and abnormal aspects of female development, pregnancy, labour and delivery and the puerperium, and the menopause; and (iii) to have gained an understanding of practical obstetrics, gynaecology, and care of the newborn applicable to general practitioners. Major topics covered include normal obstetrics and care of the normal neonate; early recognition of obstetric abnormality; management of obstetric emergencies; family planning, infertility, marital and sexual problems; vaginal discharge, menstrual disorders, pelvic tumours and office gynaecology; and management of neonatal emergencies.

Assessment

Continuous internal assessment (25%). A 2-hour objective-structured clinical examination in obstetrics, gynaecology, and neonatal paediatrics (37.5%) and a 3-hour written examination (37.5%) at the end of the teaching period. Students must pass both the written examination and the clinical examinations to pass the subject.
