Subject Description

This subject is a continuation of Health Practice 4. Objectives are to further develop new skills in health practice with a focus on the immune system, the effect of infection and neoplasms on organs and body systems and their manifestations. Core content in the human mind and behaviour component will include assessment of quality of life, classification of psychiatric disorders, psychological and physical psychiatric treatments and ethics and psychiatry. Core content in the health and society component will include screening in prevention in public health, outbreak investigations, epidemiological study designs and statistical methods including their role as the tools of evidence-based medicine, compliance in health promotion and health education strategies and the international context of health. During the introduction to clinical medicine component, students will be expected to consolidate the clinical skills they have developed over the previous four semesters. They are expected to be able to take a comprehensive medical history and integrate this with the biopsychosocial components of the patient's illness and disease. Students will be introduced to the assessment of skin lesions and soft tissue lumps, linking this with the examination of related organs and body systems. They will also learn about dealing with sensitive issues such as sexuality and understanding how people cope with cancer.

Introduction to clinical medicine: performance-based assessment in the form of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) which includes direct observation of medical interview, communication skills and physical examination (40%).
