Subject Description | The aim of the subject is to provide students with an understanding of basic principles of economics, with an emphasis on the agricultural sector. After completing this subject students will be able to apply economic ways of thinking and techniques of analysis to questions about uses of resources. The subject covers the following topics: introductory principles of micro and macro economics; scarcity; demand; supply; markets; competition and resource allocation; demand, price, elasticity and total revenue; supply, production and cost relationships; marginal analysis and profit; market failure; capital markets; investment; economic growth; role of government; economic cycles; comparative advantage and trade; and agriculture in the economy. |
Assessment | A 3-hour written examination at the end of semester worth 70%. Three assessment tasks during semester, each worth 10%. |
