Subject Description

At the conclusion of the subject the student should be able to demonstrate:

  • a critical understanding of the theory and tools for assessing cultural significance;

  • skill in preparing appropriate conservation policies;

  • and an understanding of suitable management and interpretation plans for significant natural and cultural landscapes.

Content

The content includes:

  • the theory of cultural significance, including an understanding of aesthetic, historic, scientific and social value;

  • relevance of the Burra Charter and its use in the assessment of heritage significance;

  • organizations involved in the assessment and management of landscape heritage;

  • development of conservation policies and management plans;

  • interpretation and use of landscapes judged to be of heritage significance;

  • and legal and planning processes relevant to landscape heritage policy and management.

Assessment

An individual assignment equivalent to 4000 words. (60%), and a group assignment equivalent to 2000 words (40%).
