Subject Description

This course deals with the biology, ecology and control of invasions. Case studies of particular species will be explored in some depth. Will include a short field trip, an assignment and a plant collection (if the latter is no longer part of another subject).

Topics covered will include:

  • the theoretical basis of colonization and population spread; genetics of invasions;

  • ecology of feral animals;

  • ecology of weeds;

  • effects on biodiversity;

  • chemical control (biochemistry, classification of chemicals, regulations);

  • biological control;

  • quarantine;

  • and policy issues and legislation.

Assessment

Three-hour examination (50%), a practical test (10%) and two assignments equivalent to 2500 words (each worth 20%).
