Subject Description

This subject will consider the place of community action and community development in building social infrastructure and services to respond to the health and social needs of individuals and families. A range of theories of community work will be covered, including those developed by womens' organisations, Aboriginal organisations and citizen service-users of health and mental health services. Students will explore sound practice principles in the context of innovative community work practice. Selected community work skills will be the focus of seminars with examples drawn from grassroots mobilisation efforts to provide access and equity to services for citizens with disabilities, community action campaigns, and practice in urban and non-metropolitan communities.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words. Attendance at a minimum of 75% of seminars is a hurdle requirement for this subject.
