Subject Description

This subject is a project-based introduction to techniques and issues in computational linguistics, providing an introduction to the major issues in computational linguistics and an overview of the current frameworks used in various types of Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications (parsing, text generation, machine translation, authoring aids, human-computer interaction etc.) and their developments. Students will be asked to demonstrate their awareness of the specific conceptual issues and practical difficulties by doing some project assignments using existing NLP software to solve the kinds of language processing problems considered in the subject. Some awareness of computing issues will be useful, but the subject does not require programming knowledge.
