Prerequisites

A first year single-semester philosophy subject. Students who lack this prerequisite, but believe themselves adequately prepared to attempt second/third year subjects, should consult the head of department.

Two 1-hour lectures per week for the first 11 weeks, and a 1-hour tutorial per week beginning the third week of semester

Subject Description

This subject involves the discussion of some recent philosophical explorations of the nature and ground of moral thinking. On completion of the subject students should be able to think critically about, and to evaluate, the philosophical cogency of those explorations, and acquire a background for their own further philosophical reflection on the nature and ground of morality.

Assessment

A 2-hour examination, an essay of 2000 words and regular attendance and participation in tutorials.
