Subject Description

This subject surveys the histories of select Asian societies from the early to mid 19th century up until the mid 20th century. Particular emphasis is placed on examining Western expansion into Asia and how various Asian countries and their citizens responded to the challenges that emerged from sustained contact and relations with the West from the Opium War to the Cold War. This theme is approached through various methodologies of political history, imperial history, technological history, social history, military history, diplomatic history, economic history, and intellectual history. On completion of the subject students should have a firm grasp of the important role that Western contact and Asia's various responses to the West had in shaping the nature and course of Asian history during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Assessment
