Subject Description

This subject focuses on the historical experience of ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia, Australasia and North America; their migrations, their reception in countries of the Pacific Rim, and the ways in which they have understood their 'Chineseness'. On completion of the subject, students should possess an understanding of the historical processes by which ethnic Chinese came to these countries; possess an understanding of the ways in which the Chinese have been received and presented in these countries; appreciate the different ways in which the Chinese overseas have adapted to and reflected upon their position; be able to reflect critically upon the Chinese overseas in the context of the emerging field of diasporan studies.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
