Subject Description | The aim of this subject is to trace the British/European attitudes towards lands they 'discovered' in the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically focusing on Australia and the consequent treatment of its land mass, flora and fauna. Students should complete the subject with a knowledge of issues such as the impact of exploitation of the environment by European means of production; the environmental impact of urban growth; responses to the landscape as reflected in the arts; and the desire to transform the landscape to conform to European perceptions. Students will go on to examine the emergence of environmental consciousness in Australia and current environmental issues. |
Assessment | Class participation and written work totalling 4000 words. |
