Subject Description

This subject deals with the nature of, and changes to, Chinese society during the 19th and 20th centuries. We will engage with topics such as Confucianism, Communism and their alternatives; European colonialism and its effects; gender and class relations; and China's relations with the outside world. Students will be encouraged to develop insight into the Chinese experience through the analysis of cultural products such as literature and film. On completion of the subject students should have a firm foundation in the recent history and historiography of China, and a critical perspective on historical processes in China and on the terms within which these processes are discussed.

Assessment

Class participation and written work totalling 4000 words.

Prescribed Texts

A subject reader will be available.
