Subject Description

This subject is an introduction to the Old Norse language and literature of early Scandinavia as well as the culture of Scandinavia during the Viking Age with special emphasis on mythology and religion. On completion of this subject students should have gained an understanding of the history and culture of Scandinavia during the Viking era and have developed basic reading skills in Old Norse so that they can read simple texts.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination, an essay of 1000 words, and regular language tests and assignments totalling 1000 words.
