Subject Description

This subject is an introduction to cultural geography and other theoretical traditions which foreground cultural production processes as they relate to space, place and landscape. Specific attention will be given to the social construction of identity in and through place; the relationship between the global and the local; the exercise of power through spatial logics. Specific topics will include cartography and power, the socio-semiotics of space, geographies of resistance, sexuality and space, and geographies of exclusion and inclusion. Students who complete the subject should be able to interpret contemporary social and spatial trends in the light of theoretical perspectives covered in the subject, and be able to write essays which integrate theory and empirical materials.
