Subject Description | This subject deals with questions of French/German identity and the assimilation of foreigners; regional versus national identity in France in migrants from former French colonies; the 'guest worker', 'asylum seeker' and 'ethnic German' presences in Germany; the status of children of non-citizens; illegal foreign residents; racism and anti-racism; nationality and citizenship. Students who complete this subject should be able to analyse critically the terms in which the debates concerning immigration and the status of foreign residents are conducted in France and Germany; be able to discriminate among statements of opinion, interpretations and facts regarding the definition and redefinition of the notions of culture, identity and 'Frenchness'/'Germanness'. |
Assessment | A 30-minute seminar paper, subsequently written up and totalling 2000 words, and an essay of 2000 words. |
