Prerequisites | Some knowledge of a Romance language or Latin. Students undertaking second or third year subjects in the Department of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics need to obtain permission from one of the coordinators to enrol in this subject. European studies students wishing to enrol in this subject would normally have completed first year European studies, see Prerequisites. |

Subject Description | This subject is an introduction to the study of Romance languages (in particular French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and also Rumanian and Occitan). Students should gain an understanding and knowledge of the development of the Romance languages from Latin, and aspects of their history; the relationships between Romance languages and the English-speaking world; issues in the nature and structure of the Romance languages; the position and expansion of the Romance languages around the world. |
