Prerequisites

Completion of first year beginners French with H2B or above in 116-003 Beginners French IC and 116-004 Beginners French ID or adequate knowledge of French (four or five years of secondary school French or equivalent).

Corequisites

Students must be concurrently enrolled in 116-009 Intermediate French A.

Subject Description

This subject will allow students to study key aspects of French civilisation which have shaped 19th and early 20th century French society and culture, through the analysis of graded literary texts. In addition, the subject will give students the opportunity to develop language skills in their cultural context. On completion of the subject students should be able to appreciate key aspects of 19th and 20th century French culture and the development of French society, and have acquired the ability to comment and express opinions on the texts under study and on various aspects of French culture.

Assessment

A literature and civilisation test equivalent to 1200 words and written exercises equivalent to 800 words.
