Subject Description

This subject involves the specialised reading and analysis of a book of Roman poetry from the Augustan period. Selecting a text from among the works of Horace, Propertius, Tibullus and Ovid, students will focus on issues such as the nature of the poetry book at this period; the structure of the collection; the context for the production and circulation of poetry in the Augustan period; and the style, genre and thematic content of the text. On completion of the subject students should have reached an acceptable standard in translating and interpreting the selected text.

Assessment

Two hours of class tests, and written work the equivalent of 2000 words for second/third year, 3000 words for fourth year.
