Eight hours of language classes, 1-hour self-learning in both computer and language laboratory per week

Subject Description

This is the beginners introductory level subject. Its focus is to provide basic expressions to the students to enable them to survive and function day to day in Japan. Students will learn Japanese writing systems: hiragana and katakana syllabaries, and 60 basic kanji (Chinese characters). Through learning kanji, students will also be encouraged to develop meta-cognitive awareness of kanji, which assists further kanji learning in future. Students are also introduced to aspects of Japanese culture which lie in the background of its language use. Their Japanese acquisition will be also assisted by independent learning in computer assisted language learning and language laboratory use.

Assessment

A 2-hour final examination, a 1-hour mid-semester examination, assignments totalling 2000 words, and quizzes, oral, and listening tests totalling 3000 words.

Prescribed Texts

Additional materials may be supplied by the Institute.

  • Yasu-Hiko Tohsaku, Yookoso! An invitation to Contemporary Japanese. (2nd ed), 1999.
