 110-115 Japanese Popular Culture

Note

Formerly available as 158-245/345. Students who have completed 158-245/345 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. Normally, students enrolling as part of a cultural studies major or as an elective credit must enrol in the non-language stream. Students who wish to take the class as part of a Japanese major must enrol in the language stream. Native speakers must enrol in the language stream whether they are taking the class as an elective or part of a major.

Prerequisites

Normally, the completion of 50 points of first year study. These must include 25 points of first year study in anthropology, art history, cinema studies, criminology, English, history, history and philosophy of science, linguistics and applied linguistics, philosophy, political science or sociology for the cultural studies or elective credit in the non-language stream; and the completion of 110-105 Japanese 3B Core and 110-106 Japanese 3B-IT in the previous semester for the language stream.

Subject Description

The subject includes a brief history of popular culture in Japan, and an examination of the various media of popular culture including literature, manga (comics), magazines, newspapers, television, film, and music. The subject aims to analyse the relationship between popular cultural phenomena and society in general, including a discussion of popular culture as both a product and a determinant of national and gender identity. This subject introduces students of Japanese language to various elements of Japanese popular culture as well as the academic approaches taken when looking at popular culture.

Assessment

Written work totalling 2000 words, a 2-hour written exam and class participation. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to submit the final essay.
