37.5 points of second/third year study for third year. Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma or Fourth Year Honours in Indonesian or the Postgraduate Diploma or Fourth Year Honours in Anthropology or Asian Studies for fourth year.

Subject Description

This subject includes a survey of the ethnic and linguistic diversity of Indonesia in its Southeast Asian and Oceanic context. Topics include: Southeast Asian prehistory, ecology and geography; language classifications and typologies; language change; semantic change; mythic histories and hierarchy in social organisation; metaphor, ritual language and cultural classifications. Students who complete the subject should be equipped with a practical knowledge of problems and possibilities in combining linguistic and anthropological theories and methods, and their complementarity.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words for third year, 5000 words for fourth year, and class participation.
