Subject Description

This subject involves readings in modern academic and technical Chinese. Students will be introduced to texts from a variety of different disciplines and technical fields, and undertake an independent reading project concentrating on a field of special interest. Reading strategies, technical reference works, and the use of word banks will be explored. Students who complete this subject should gain familiarity with the stylistic and linguistic features of academic and technical Chinese; ability to translate and comment on the selections studied; some facility in reading and translating unseen passages; familiarity with a range of reference tools; and the ability to undertake an independent project in a field of their choice.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
