Subject Description

This subject is an introductory survey to pre-modern Chinese literature from the 6th to the beginning of the 20th century. The main focus will be on the interaction of elite and popular works, including the oral and dramatic arts, within their social context. Works examined will include fiction, drama, poetry and literary criticism. Students who complete this subject should gain a general understanding of the development of the Chinese literary tradition and development of major genres and themes as well as an appreciation of the major issues in elite and popular culture in imperial China.
