Subject Description

This subject investigates some aspects of traditional Chinese society which are of specific relevance for our understanding of China today. Topics include population, family and the position of women, ancestor worship, popular religion, agriculture, commerce, bureaucracy, and crime. Students should gain familiarity with some major themes in Chinese culture, traditional as well as contemporary; an understanding of some of the basic dynamics of Chinese society; and insight into some of the cultural values and social structures reflected in the Chinese language.
