Subject Description

Using texts of literature, philosophy, and intellectual history, supplemented by films of both western and Chinese origin, this subject will examine both how the Chinese are imagined and portrayed by western cultures, and how the Chinese depict themselves. Students who complete the subject should be familiar with major issues in the 'orientalism' debate as well as able to go beyond 'orientalism' to explore the significance of representations, in both China and the West.
