Subject Description

The subject is in three parts: language, which involves a review of Ukrainian grammar, development of conversation and composition skills using texts on contemporary themes; literature and society, which is an introduction to major cultural, social and political developments in Ukraine in the 19th century and the study of selected literary texts from Kotliarevs'kyi to Franko; and the Slavic culture core, in which students receive an introduction to the contemporary cultural and social issues confronting Ukraine and other Slavic and East European countries in the 20th century.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination and for language weekly written exercises equivalent to 1500 words and a 10-minute class paper; for literature and culture a 1500 word essay and a 10-minute class paper.
