Subject Description | This subject focuses on the world of Classical Athens through a study of selected works of literature and art. During the course of the subject students should become familiar with Greek tragedy and comedy, the importance of myth and religion in Athenian literature and art, and the principal material evidence for Classical Athens, including the Parthenon. The subject also focuses on the society which produced such literature and art. Particular attention will be paid to examining the notion of the city-state and democracy in Athens. On completion of the subject students should recognise the distinctive features of Athenian culture and understand the main scholarly approaches to the study of Classical Athens. |
Assessment | Tutorial participation and two essays, one of 2500 words, one of 1500 words. |
