Subject Description | This subject provides a knowledge of the major artistic currents in the art and architecture of East Asia through the analysis of key examples from China and Japan, forming an introduction to East Asian art and a foundation for further study in the field. It examines significant examples of architecture, sculpture and painting that are representative of key traditions, social groups and art forms in East Asian art and architecture. Students should gain familiarity with specific national styles and themes as well as the transcendent international artforms associated with Buddhism. Students will also encounter broader influences in iconography, style and aesthetics from India, and explore issues such as the relationship between art and patronage, art and belief, art and materials. Various Asian artforms and types will be introduced, including handscrolls and hanging scrolls, folding and sliding screens. |
