Subject Description | This subject investigates shifting conceptions of 'modernism' in fiction written in English from the turn of the century until the 1930s, with particular attention to the ways in which the new-critical canon of modernist texts has been destabilised by recent developments in criticism and theory. Students who complete this subject successfully will have acquired a first-hand acquaintance with some famous examples of modernist fiction; an understanding of the controversies provoked by the original publication of these books and recent reconsiderations of them; and an understanding of 'modernism' as a stylistic and period concept applied to fiction. |
