Bachelor of Music students who wish to undertake a primary or secondary teaching qualification and who have completed at least two years of the Bachelor of Music can apply to transfer to the combined Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching, a five year full-time (or approved equivalent) program. The combined course comprises a total of 500 points, at least 300 points undertaken in the Bachelor of Music and up to 200 points in the Bachelor of Teaching. The first three years of the combined course are devoted to music subjects, with Bachelor of Teaching subjects normally undertaken in fourth and fifth years.
Students applying to enter the combined course at the end of second year must:
have successfully completed at least 187.5 points of music subjects, including all core first and second year subjects.
For intending secondary teachers: have the prerequisites for Learning Area (Sec) Music A and Learning Area (Sec) Music B, or undertake to have taken subjects that will give them the prerequisites by the end of their third year.
Students may also apply to enter the combined course at the end of their third year. In this case they must:
have successfully completed at least 287.5 points of Music subjects, including all core first, second and third year subjects.
For intending secondary teachers: have the prerequisites for Learning Area (Sec) Music A and Learning Area (Sec) Music B and undertake to complete the four Group Music Skills subjects within the remaining two years of their course.
Graduates qualify for registration as specialist music teachers in primary or secondary schools in both classroom and instrumental teaching methods, and can also teach in private practice.
Note: Due to a revision of the structure of this combined course, there will be no intake in 2001.

Bachelor of Teaching students complete a minimum of 45 days of supervised practice teaching in schools plus an extended internship in final year. Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching students should note that they are expected to meet their practicum commitments where these may occur in semester breaks at the same time as some music subjects are offered on an intensive basis.
Students who wish to complete the Bachelor of Teaching (Honours) within fourth and fifth year will be able to apply in the same way as all other Bachelor of Teaching students.
Deferral of a place in the combined course is not available.
Part-time studies are available in the first three years of the combined course (the music component) but not in fourth and fifth year (the BTeach component).
Students must initially gain admission to the Bachelor of Music through the normal VTAC processes. At the end of second year of the Bachelor of Music, students who have completed at least 87.5 points, including all compulsory first year subjects, can apply for the combined course by submitting an internal transfer form to the Faculty of Education. Admission to the combined course is also possible after third year, provided that the prerequisite subjects for two teaching areas have been completed. Selection will be based on academic merit.
