Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Arts who wish to undertake a secondary teaching qualification and who have completed at least one year of the Bachelor of Creative Arts can apply to transfer to the combined Bachelor of Creative Arts/Bachelor of Teaching, a four-year full-time (or approved equivalent) program. The combined course comprises a total of 400 points with 250 points undertaken in the Bachelor of Creative Arts and 150 points in the Bachelor of Teaching. The first two years of the combined course are devoted to Creative Arts subjects, with Bachelor of Teaching subjects normally undertaken in third and fourth year.
The normal pattern of study is as follows:
|
Note: The structure given above may be varied in several ways:
students must have completed a minimum of 200 points in Creative Arts subjects before being able to proceed to the Bachelor of Teaching subjects;
students who are completing a Diploma (such as the Diploma in Modern Languages) concurrently with the Bachelor of Creative Arts must have completed a minimum of 200 points in the Creative Arts/Diploma course and have undertaken sufficient studies in their two chosen teaching areas to proceed to the Bachelor of Teaching component of the combined course;
if students complete some level 2 Creative Arts subjects in first year, they will be able to do additional level 2 or level 3 subjects in subsequent years;
students may take one Bachelor Teaching subject in second year, allowing them to take 25 points of Creative Arts subjects in third year.
Bachelor of Teaching students complete a minimum of 45 days of supervised practice teaching in schools plus an extended internship in final year. Bachelor of Creative Arts/Bachelor of Teaching students should note that they are expected to meet their practicum commitments where these may occur in semester breaks at the same time as some creative arts subjects are offered on an intensive basis.
Students who wish to complete a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) degree undertake the additional honours year as a final fifth year after fourth year of the combined program.
Students who wish to complete the Bachelor of Teaching (Honours) within third and fourth years will be able to apply in the same way as all other Bachelor of Teaching students.
Deferral of a place in the combined course is not possible.
Part-time studies are available in the first two years of the combined course (the creative arts component) but not in third and fourth years (the Bachelor of Teaching component).
Students must initially gain admission to the Bachelor of Creative Arts through the normal VTAC processes. At the end of first year of the Bachelor of Creative Arts, students who have completed at least 87.5 points can apply for the combined course by submitting an internal transfer form to the Faculty of Education. Admission to the combined course is also possible after second year, provided that the prerequisite subjects for two teaching areas have been completed. Selection will be based on academic merit and conditional upon appropriate selection of later year creative arts subjects to meet prerequisites for the student's intended teaching areas.
