The Faculty of Arts offers interdepartmental programs in ancient studies and Medieval studies housed in the Department of History. The programs offer students a means of developing or extending an interest in ancient history, archaeology, philosophy, and other classical studies subjects, as well as the European Middle Ages. Drawing upon subjects offered by individual departments, the programs offer coursework in Latin and Ancient Greek and other appropriate languages, and add other departmental offerings in art history, classics and archaeology, English, history, Italian, music and philosophy.
Students may complete a major in ancient studies, in Medieval studies, or a double major in ancient and Medieval studies.
The programs commence at first year and there are no prerequisites for entry at this level.
Students may also enter the programs at second year, counting the completion of 25 points of first year in any area of study as a component of their major in ancient studies or Medieval studies.
Enrolment in beginners Latin (see Latin) or Ancient Greek (see Ancient Greek) at the Centre for Classics and Archaeology, or any other appropriate language, is an excellent preparation for ancient studies or Medieval studies.
Certain areas of study have first year prerequisites which must be satisfied for entry to second/third year subjects. In case of doubt, consult the relevant area of study entries in this Handbook.
A major in ancient atudies or Medieval studies usually consists of nine 12.5 point subjects (totalling 112.5 points). It comprises:
two first year subjects (25 points) which may be taken from the list of recommended first year subjects below, or, from any area of study and;
seven second/third year subjects from the lists below of ancient studies subjects or Medieval studies subjects (totalling 87.5 points).
A major must include the completion of two subjects of language study (at least 25 points) in the languages specified below. If this language requirement is completed in first year, seven non-language subjects must be taken across the second/third year of the major. See Language study component below.
Students undertaking a major in ancient studies or in Medieval studies must complete two of the following language subjects.
Ancient Greek and Latin are offered by the Centre for Classics and Archaeology, and Old English is taught in the Department of English.

Students are recommended to take two subjects from one of the following lists of first year subjects toward their ancient studies or Medieval studies major. The completion of these subjects is not, however, a formal prerequisite for either major.

Students must take seven subjects in ancient studies for an ancient studies major, or seven subjects in Medieval studies for a Medieval studies major.

Students may take the following subjects at third year to count towards the major in Medieval studies on the condition that they satisfy the prerequisites. The usual prerequisite for entry to a third/fourth year subject is 37.5 points of study at second year.

A double major in ancient studies and Medieval studies involves the completion of the second/third year requirements for both the ancient studies and Medieval studies majors.
The double major usually comprises:
two first year subjects (25 points) which may be taken from the list of recommended first year subjects above, or, from any area of study and;
fourteen second/third year subjects from the lists above of ancient studies subjects or Medieval studies subjects (totalling 175 points).
These must include seven second/third year subjects (87.5 points) from ancient studies and seven subjects from Medieval studies (87.5 points).
The double major must include the completion of two subjects of language study (25 points) from the list of language subjects above. If this language requirement is completed in first year, 14 non-language subjects must be taken across the second/third year of the major.
There is no Honours program in ancient studies or in Medieval studies.
However, it is possible to undertake advanced study with a focus on ancient studies or Medieval studies under the auspices of honours programs offered within other areas of study in the Faculty of Arts. These include history, classics and archaeology, art history, and English.
