The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce offers a selection of subjects, a major and an honours program in economics to Bachelor of Arts students.
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are permitted to enrol in a range of subjects offered by other faculties, but must complete a minimum of 50 points of first year subjects and 100 points of second/third year subjects in areas of study approved by the Faculty of Arts. BA students wishing to undertake a major in economics will need to plan their course carefully to ensure they meet both departmental prerequisites and Faculty requirements.
Combined course students will not usually be eligible to enrol in any subjects from this area of study: please consult a Faculty of Arts course adviser for more information.
Students intending to major in economics should note that Mathematical Methods is a prerequisite for 316-130 Quantitative Methods 1. Introductory Microeconomics and Macroeconomics must be taken before entering second year Intermediate Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.
A major in economics in the Bachelor of Arts degree usually consists of ten 12.5 point subjects totalling 125 points. It comprises:

The prerequisites for entry to Fourth Year Honours in Economics are:
completion of all the requirements for the BA and;
completion of a major in economics which must include:
another level-300 economics subject or other approved third year subject
an average grade of H2B or higher over the subjects of the major.
The Faculty of Arts will not admit to honours a candidate who has previously graduated Bachelor of Commerce (honours or ordinary degree).

It is possible to combine honours in economics with several areas of study, for example economics and history, economics and philosophy, and economics and political science. Other combinations may be considered. In all cases, candidates are required to obtain approval from the heads of department concerned and the Faculty of Arts. Any student interested in undertaking combined honours should contact the Faculties of Arts or Economics and Commerce for more information.
