Subject Description

This subject studies the political, social and economic institutions of contemporary Greece and Cyprus commencing with the aftermath of the Asia Minor disaster of 1922. Students should become familiar with issues such as: the settlement of the refugees and its consequences; the impact on Greek society and culture of a clash between a democratic, communist and racially-ordered Europe; Greece's experience in World War II and the origins of the Greek Civil War; unemployment, emigration and the 'economic miracle' of the 1950s and 1960s; urbanisation and rural displacement; the 'oligarchic' parliamentarism of the postwar years and the 1967 military coup; the Socialist experiment and Europeanisation in the 1980s; the Cyprus question and Greek foreign policy in the 1980s and 1990s; the role of education and civil society as agents of democratisation and modernisation.

Assessment

A 1500 word tutorial paper, a 2000 word essay, and either a 1500 word reflective essay or a 90-minute test, and class participation.
