Subject Description | This subject is an introduction to the main features of the development of western Christianity from the late Middle Ages to the present. The social, cultural and political contexts in which Christianity developed will be analysed. Topics will include: the religious background of the Reformation movements; Luther and the Reformation in Germany; the Reformation in England; the spread of the Reformed ideas in Europe; the Church in the Age of Enlightenment; Christianity in America; Puritanism and revolution; the Church in an era of revolutions; the Church in an age of secularism; the Church in Australian society; the Ecumenical movement; and Christianity in Russia, China and Latin America. |
Assessment | Two 500 word document exercises, an essay of 1500 words, and a 2-hour examination. |
