Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable students to:

  • explain the nature and importance of human resources as an organisational asset;

  • provide a knowledge of the theories, techniques and approaches to managing people-related problems and issues;

  • develop an understanding of the industrial relations system including current issues in Australia;

  • develop strategies for the minimisation of industrial conflict.

The content includes: Nature and importance of human resource management. Selection and retention of staff. Training and developing people. Performance appraisal. Establishing and maintaining effective employee relations. Industrial relations structure. Industrial relations. Challenges from structural efficiency negotiations.

Assessment

Three assignments of 2000 words (30% each); seminar presentation (10%).
