Subject Description

The object of this subject is to develop in the participant an ability to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the performance characteristics of irrigation equipment including controllers, valves and application equipment;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the installation techniques required for various irrigation systems;

  • demonstrate an understanding of techniques required for fault finding and repair of various irrigation systems;

  • describe soil moisture retention and movement for various soil types and site conditions;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of the performance characteristics of a wide range of contemporary drainage materials;

  • demonstrate a knowledge of drainage construction techniques.

The content includes: Analysis of irrigation equipment for residential and commercial sites, interpretation of performance data to assist in selection of equipment, installation of pipe valves applicators and controllers, fault finding and repair of irrigation systems, factors contributing to excessive soil moisture content, soil moisture retention and movement in soils, soil moisture movement relevant to specific site conditions, the performance characteristics of drainage materials and systems, the installation of drainage systems, costing of construction techniques, work scheduling, site management.

Assessment

Examination (90 minutes) (30%), assignment (25%), practical skills (45%).
