Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • explain the key factors in the design of a production nursery;

  • describe the organisational and operational activities of a commercial nursery;

  • explain the process of introduction of new plant cultivars and the registration of plant breeders' rights;

  • describe the techniques in the propagation of indigenous species for re-vegetation establishments;

  • outline the operations of specialist plant production crops.

The content includes: Production nursery design, materials handling, alternate and integrated production systems, evaluation and registration of new cultivars, revegetation principles and techniques, commercial production methods of specific crops - cut flowers, turf and viticulture.

Assessment

One examination (60%); one production report (40%).
