Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend the participant's ability to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the role of semi natural and natural landscapes as an alternative to traditional public open space;

  • formulate community oriented policies for the management of public open space;

  • describe the principles and techniques employed in the creation of habitat landscapes;

  • recognise the relationships between flora and fauna in habitat landscapes;

  • demonstrate understanding of historic garden management practices;

  • demonstrate appropriate regeneration and management of large gardens.

The content includes: Client oriented design, formulation of planting designs for specific locations, management of historic gardens, management of revegetation and other semi natural sites, selection of habitat species, principles and techniques of establishing habitat species. Public involvement in the management and provision of public open space. Site visits to horticulturally significant landscape and management areas for revegetation and historic garden management.

Assessment

Examination 90 minutes (30%), assignment (50%), seminar (20%).
