Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to extend participant's ability to:

  • list horticulturally worthwhile species found in the major terrestrial plant communities of Australia;

  • recognise how the natural habitat in which species is found frequently determines its horticultural requirements and tolerances;

  • recognise the potential of indigenous plant communities for the selection of superior horticultural forms and development;

  • identify and describe the cultural and aesthetic characteristics of a further 200 landscape plants.

The content includes: The origins and utilisation of the Australian flora, major terrestrial plant communities in Australia, indigenous trees and shrubs, late winter flowering plants, rhododendrons, spring flowering trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, bulbs, and climbers.

Assessment

Examinations 40 and 60 minutes (20% and 30%), plant material assignment (50%).
